International seminar on urban landscape planning

This international seminar seeks to reflect current issues associated with urban landscape planning and planning for larger land areas impacted by human activities. Sustainable development will be a sub-theme of the seminar, with guest speakers from Iceland, Lichtenstein, Sweden and the Czech Republic offering both local and international perspectives.

A guided walk along the Landsape Festival route is intended not only for the visitors of Colors of Ostrava festival, who do not know Ostrava, but also for the citizens who want to hear about the history of Ostrava's urbanism. The start of the tour is scheduled for Prokeš Square, in front of the New Town Hall at 11 am.

The tour will be led by Mgr. Martin Strakoš.

Green Roofs itself is organising the expert section of the event, serving as the umbrella organisation of the Svaz zakládání a údržby zeleně (The Greenery Planting and Maintenance Association); this section is entitled “Green Roofs as a Component of Urban Green Infrastructure”.

The construction of green roofs serves as a typical example of positive externality – meaning a situation, in which the economic activities of a particular individual or entity end up benefiting the wider community, without the members of this community having to pay for this quality of life improvement. Among other benefits, green roof vegetation retains rainwater, offers thermal insulation – thus reducing the costs associated with both cooling and heating buildings – and absorbs CO 2  as well as toxic materials present in the air. By absorbing rainwater, green roofs ease the burden of urban sewage systems during torrential rainstorms. Green roofs also reduce dust levels and serve to dampen noise; they support biodiversity for countless forms of wildlife; they create pleasant areas for rest and relaxation – and all in spaces that are hitherto largely unused. In recent years, greenery both on roofs and in subterranean areas such as car parks, tunnels, and roads has been adopted as part of European-wide targeted strategic solutions intended to fight the affects of climate change. Such efforts represent a chance to significantly improve  nvironmental conditions in towns and cities across the continent.

Conference aims:
The main aim of the project is to increase awareness of the significance and function of green
roofs, their design, installation and subsequent maintenance across both local and national
government, as well as in professional circles and among the wider public. The project also
seeks to foster a future situation in which the construction of green roofs is viewed as a
standard, responsible solution for every new building, as well as – structures permitting – for
existing ones. At the same time, the conference also seeks to provide elected leaders with
information on the reasons for, and opportunities to support, the construction of green roofs.

Such produce is not grown on a commercial scale, but rather serves primarily as a social and

The outdoor Design+kilometres exhibition will present examples of a number of infrastructure construction design solutions from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. It will detail the process of their creation, from the initial designs to the ultimate finished works. The exhibition will offer a fascinating insight into the ways in which design concepts are applied for large-scale projects.

Czech Industrial Topography

Exhibition of successful transformations of industrial buildings for new uses, which was prepared in collaboration with the Research Centre for Industrial Heritage FA CTU Prague, led by Benjamin Fragner.

Artscape Norway

The exhibition presents artworks and small architecture, which became part of the Norwegian landscape and public space. Norway´s continual care of the cultural landscape and public space through unique artistic and architectural achievements is a specific feature that enhances the lives of local communities and fascinates visitors from abroad.

The seventh annual Landscape Festival will bring around thirty site-specific installations and interventions into Ostrava’s public spaces during the summer months, created by numerous top architects, landscape architects and artists. The first of these installations emerged from the student “design & build” workshop at the end of April under the guidance of Finnish architect SAMI RINTALA in conjunction with a number of colleagues from the Czech Republic.

LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS WITH SAMI RINTALA AND IVAN KROUPA

On Wednesday, April 24, 2019, architects Sami Rintala and Ivan Kroupa gave a lecture at the University of Ostrava in which the pair presented their inspiring projects. In the ensuing days (April 24-28), the “design & build” workshop took place in the city, which then yielded the first installation of this year’s Landscape Festival. Under the guidance of Finnish architect Sami Rintala, architects Ivan Kroupa and Jana Moravcová, landscape architect Pavlína Malíková, and academic sculptor Jakub Gajda, students from Architecture Studio 2 of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) and the Architecture Department of the Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB-TUO), jointly created a site-specific installation, which will remain in place until the end of July 2019. 

A WALLED-OFF GARDEN

The main body of the park behind Ostrava’s Tieto Towers office bloc area remains undeveloped and unutilised in a city planning sense. The atmosphere of the site is framed by a number of houses that span the various epochs of Ostrava’s history, as well as a haphazard network of paths, and a beautiful assortment of fully-grown trees. “Given the relatively short implementation timeframe, we decided to use existing modules to revamp this space,” explained Sami Rintala. In order to generate an ethereal atmosphere at the site, the working group made use of temporary construction fencing. The project was inspired by the notion of creating a paradise – meaning a place where visitors are not disturbed by the bustle of the surrounding city, and in which visitors sense a direct connection to the heavens and cosmic phenomena. “In old Persian, the word paradise means 'walled garden enclosure’. Consequently, we chose aluminium fence components as our central element, which created a network of corridors flowing into a central space. The inner spaces of these structures offer visitors a fascinating experience primarily oriented towards a celebration of the location itself,” says Rintala. A bird’s-eye view underscores the complexity of the chosen form. “The ‘spider’s line’ dominates and transforms the entire park,” adds architect Ivan Kroupa. At a particular point, the installation intersects with an existing network of walkways, thus becoming a barrier. In this way, it highlights the importance of integrating the individual areas of Ostrava – a key overall mission of the Landscape Festival.

The 2019 Landscape Festival in Ostrava will launch with a multi-disciplinary meeting of staff from a number of universities. Recognised academics and local experts in the field will presentaudiences with insights on the historical development of Ostrava, as well as the currentchallenges faced by the city. Are you interested in the results of current landscaping analyses, or do you have a wider interest in the development potential of Ostrava? If the answer to these questions is “yes” then the Landscape Festival is certainly an event not to be missed. Beyond the construction of buildings, landscapes and public spaces serve as equally important components of urban planning. Outdoor spaces offer considerable potential. But how can such potential be fully mined? Can art in public spaces be regarded as a resource for the development of a post-industrial city? Notable figures in the field will offer crucial insights on the various approaches to tackling such issues within the city of Ostrava.
